Context

The Community of Municipalities of the Valleys of Thones (CCVT) is committed to an environmental transition trajectory. To reconcile tourism development, soft mobility and the preservation of mountain environments, she wanted reliable data on the use of trails and natural areas.

The Kiomda service

Since 2023, the CCVT has equipped itself with 14 Verdilo pedestrian traffic counters installed gradually (6 then 4 then 4). The device includes: A purchase with a full warranty over 1 or 5 years: hardware, batteries, maintenance, connectivity. Monitoring of pedestrian traffic on developed paths. A possibility of seasonal adaptation: some sensors are moved in winter to monitor the practice of snowshoeing.

A management tool for elected officials and technicians

The data from the sensors allows the CCVT to:

  • Better size the trail developments (walkways, pavements, safety),
  • Identify the impacts of new practices such as trail running or mountain biking,
  • Finding the right balance between tourist attractiveness, local acceptability and Combating overtourism.
Attendance monitoring allows us to improve facilities and to assess the impact of new practices.

In perspective: mountain biking and greenways

The community is preparing for the future:

  • Of Mountain bike counting tests will be launched soon on adapted routes.
  • One Future greenway should connect the valleys to the Annecy region, with a need for follow-up as soon as it opens.
  • The CCVT participates in the process Annecy Mountains, by promoting the cohabitation between users and mountain environments.
It works well. We even reused some sensors in winter on snowshoe trails.

Issues and impacts

  • Support the forms of diversification of mountain activities
  • Better distribution of flows over time and space
  • Justify investments in alternative mobility
  • Anticipate usage tensions, especially in summer

Feedback

Between 8 and 10. We are satisfied. The theft of a meter cooled us a bit, but that does not call into question the quality of the tool.

Following this incident, the community is considering“hollowed-out pole” option proposed by Kiomda, to make devices more secure in certain sensitive areas (for example during hunting season).

Lac de Mande is a drinking water reservoir and a tourist site. The ARS, the State and the Community of Municipalities are interested in the evolution of attendance. It is also an area with quite a few possible accesses, so the mobile box is interesting for us.

“We need to know how often the various existing installations along the way are used, for their maintenance and also to know if certain crossing points can be used as educational information sites on the surrounding natural environment.”

“We needed reliable data to know if access restrictions should be put in place to limit the impact on local wildlife.”
