Questions you may already be asking yourself

Mountain site managers will recognize some of these needs:

01

How to anticipate peak traffic due to the weather or school holidays?

02

Is the pressure on the trails really increasing from year to year?

03

Which sectors are beginning to show signs of erosion or overload?

04

Are the facilities (footbridges, viewpoints, stopping areas) sized correctly?

05

How to objectify the financing needs of the department, the region or Natura 2000 partners?

06

When should maintenance, rescue or awareness teams be mobilized?

Why do mountain sites pose specific challenges?

Tourist and cultural sites often combine several constraints: strong seasonality, security constraints, comfort requirements for the public, and reporting expectations on the part of supervisory authorities or partners.

Can your site be measured?

In the vast majority of mountain sites, there is at least one point where traffic tightens: trail start, footbridge, rocky corridor, forest gate, via ferrata entrance, access to a belvedere. These are places that are particularly suitable for counting.

When flows are very diffuse, the challenge is to identify a point representative of the passage. This is often possible, even at altitude.
We analyze site geometry, uses, seasonality and security to recommend a reliable and usable location.

Where to Install Counters in Mountain and Outdoor Areas?

From installation to data reading, each meter function meets the constraints of mountain sites: autonomy, robustness, discretion and a clear summary of visit trends.

Monitoring uses to support the transition in mountains

Since 2023, the CCVT has been using 14 Kiomda counters to track the use of its hiking trails. The data collected makes it possible to adjust the arrangements and to anticipate the rise of new practices (snowshoeing, mountain biking).

Val Cenis

The Val Cenis ski resort has implemented a temporary counting system to gain a better understanding of actual usage of certain winter facilities. Thanks to Kiomda counters, the teams have been able to accurately quantify visitor flow in key areas, particularly on a ski touring route and a snowpark.
