Context

The Terral Park is one of the oldest domains around Montpellier, recorded in history as early as the 9th century as the summer residence of the bishops of Maguelone. Today, it is a space for walking and culture, hosting events and entertainment all year round. With the upcoming installation of the Maison de la Nature, the municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Védas wishes to have precise figures on the attendance of the park, in order to adapt its activities, assess the impact of the new infrastructures and respond to the requests of elected officials.

The counting data is bi-directional and corresponds to the monitoring of pedestrian traffic. They are put up in 15 minute increments. They can be consulted and exported on a dedicated account monitoring interface.

Visitor Tracking for a Site in Full Transformation

The Parc du Terral, located in Saint-Jean-de-Védas, is a prominent natural and cultural space, hosting a variety of activities such as leisure walks, educational workshops, performances, a music school, meetings, and private events.

In the coming years, the site will undergo a major transformation with the creation of a Maison de la Nature, housed within the Château du Terral.

To better understand park usage and anticipate the needs of this future facility, a Kiomda counting device has been installed to monitor visitor attendance.

"Until now, we hadn’t fully utilized visitor data. But with the upcoming Maison de la Nature, tracking attendance for both activities and independent visitors will become highly relevant."

A Monitoring Tool to Meet the Needs of Local Officials

The attendance data is primarily intended for municipal officials, who seek indicators to assess the park’s popularity and adjust its uses.

"It’s always useful to have this information—elected officials request it. It allows us to precisely answer the question: Is the park well-frequented, and to what extent?"

With the Kiomda counter, it will soon be possible to compare overall site attendance with the footfall at organized events, helping to adjust activities and better understand the impact of future developments.

Optimizing Counter Placement for More Accurate Tracking

The counter is currently installed near the main gate, next to a small automated entrance and nearby landscaping. However, there are concerns that it may not be capturing all visitor traffic, particularly from other entry points.

"The counter is mounted on a fixed post in a basin, positioned on a hill that has eroded. It no longer holds securely."

As part of the preventive maintenance scheduled for late 2024, counter repositioning will be considered for improved efficiency. Two options are being evaluated:

Relocating the counter to the main entrance, where it could better capture overall visitor flow.
Installing the counter near the 'Grangette' entrance, which will serve as the future gateway to the Maison de la Nature.

This optimization will ensure more representative and reliable data collection.

Lac de Mande is a drinking water reservoir and a tourist site. The ARS, the State and the Community of Municipalities are interested in the evolution of attendance. It is also an area with quite a few possible accesses, so the mobile box is interesting for us.
