The Community of Municipalities of Cèze Cévennes has carried out a 2.5 km greenway, baptized L'Échappée, connecting Gagnières to Saint-Paul-le-Jeune.
This project is a first intermunicipal cooperation, with the ambition of eventually becoming part of the structuring network of Via Ardèche.
The acquisition of a counting device is part of the regulatory framework of the call for projects Cyclable Continuity, which requires the installation of a meter when the amount of subsidy exceeds €500,000.
“We acquired the box because we were the winners of the Cyclable Continuity call for projects, for which it is requested to install a meter beyond a certain level of subsidy.”
The Kiomda service
Kiomda provided the supply and maintenance of a pedestrian/bicycle counting unit, equipped with a anti-vandalism protection cover, installed in accordance with technical recommendations, in particular under an engineering structure.
“We followed your installation recommendations and installed it under a bridge.”
The device is associated with a dedicated count monitoring interface, with:
- A count bidirectional,
- A distinction pedestrians/bikes,
- data feedback in 15 minute increments,
- an update of the interface twice a day (noon and midnight).
Uses and exploitation of data
Before installing the meter, the community had carried out a Projected attendance based on data from another territory. The exploitation of Kiomda data now makes it possible to confront these hypotheses with local reality.
“We had carried out a projection of attendance based on a counter held in another municipality, but in Ardèche, the tourist context is different.”
Indeed, the territory has strong specificities:
- a marked tourist attractiveness,
- few bike rental companies,
- A positioning in End of itinerary, which limits initial uses.
These elements directly influence the number of visitors observed and contribute to strategic thinking about the itinerary.
Observed benefits
The data collected allows the community to:
- to objectify the bicycle development potential,
- to identify the levers for improvement (communication, services, continuity of facilities),
- to better understand the pedestrian/cyclist cohabitation, the greenway is also a portion of a long-distance hiking trail.
“We will always have a disparity between pedestrians and bicycles, but we want to further develop cycling attendance.”
The community has also hired educational actions around the greenway in order to strengthen its visibility and ownership by users.
“For example, we have carried out an educational project around the greenway to make it known.”
A reflection at the scale of the territory
In addition to monitoring attendance, the Kiomda counter is part of a long-term thinking on the continuity of the route and its integration into a wider cycling network.
“Things need to be rethought around the bike path: communication, promotion, participation in the Ardèche route, continuity of developments. The idea is that this itinerary does not end there.”
